1. French bin strike: Paris holds its nose as waste piles up

- The bins are overflowing in large areas of Paris a week into a strike by waste collectors, with thousands of tonnes of rubbish sitting abandoned on the streets of the French capital.

- The workers are striking over the Macron government's proposals to raise the pension age from 62 to 64.

- Other cities including Nantes, Rennes and Le Havre are also affected.

2. Gun control: Biden to sign executive order on background checks

- US President Joe Biden is set to issue an executive order that aims to increase the number of background checks conducted before firearm sales.

- It aims to move the US "as close to universal background checks as possible without additional legislation".

- The Democratic president will sign the measure during a visit Tuesday to Monterey Park, California, where a gunman killed 11 people in January.

3. Meta layoffs: Facebook-owner to cut 10,000 staff

- Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has announced that it will cut 10,000 jobs.

- It will be the second series of mass redundancies from the tech giant, which laid off 11,000 employees in November 2022.

- In addition to the 10,000 jobs being lost, 5,000 open roles at the company will be left unfilled.
