1. Colombia protests: Seventy-nine police officers freed after being taken hostage
- A group of police officers and oilfield workers taken hostage during protests in Colombia's southern Caqueta province have been freed.
- Violence erupted on Thursday after residents blockaded an oil exploration company's compound. They were demanding its help to build roads in the area.
- Colombian leader Gustavo Petro had called for the 79 officers and nine Emeral Energy employees to be let go.
- A police officer and a civilian have already been killed during the unrest.

2. Genevieve Lhermitte: Belgian mother who killed her five children euthanised
- A Belgian woman who murdered her five children has been euthanized at her own request, 16 years after the killings.
- Genevieve Lhermitte killed her son and four daughters, aged three to 14, in the town of Nivelles on 28 February 2007, while their father was away.
- She then tried to take her own life but failed, and ended up calling emergency services for help.
- The 56-year-old was sentenced to life in prison in 2008, before being moved to a psychiatric hospital in 2019.
- In Belgium the law allows for people to choose to be euthanized if they are deemed to be suffering from unbearable psychological, and not just physical, suffering that cannot be healed.

3. Xi Jinping's power grab and why it matters
- The National People's Congress, which starts this weekend, will be the symbolic culmination of Xi Jinping's epic power grab.
- China's leader has overhauled the Communist Party placing himself at the core and nobody else has even a remote chance of challenging him.
- The starkest representation of this will be in the shift in personnel to be announced at the annual political meeting, a rubber-stamp session of nearly 3,00 delegates.
- Take the role of the premier, the person managing the world's second-largest economy and second only to Mr Xi in the power structure.
