- With inflation at 8% and poor approval ratings for the Democratic president, Republicans were hoping to make big strides in retaking Congress. Why hasn't that happened?

- While the Republican party has made modest gains and remains favoured to win the House of Representatives, the Senate remained hotly contested and the Democrats have performed better than expected.

- Inflation and the economy proved not to be as damaging to Democrats as they had feared.

- While Democrats' views have darkened this year, they tend to remain more positive than Republicans and independents, raking such economic concerns behind other issues, such as climate change, racism and abortion.

2. World's automakers fall short on climate goals, says Greenpeace report

- Major automakers will need to sell about half the number of petrol and diesel vehicles than under current projections to be aligned with key climate goals, Greenpeace said Thursday.

- To line up with limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, no more than 315 million new vehicles running on fossil fuels can still be sold worldwide.

- With pressure growing to cut emissions, top carmakers are already accelerating their efforts to dump combustion engines and shift to producing more electric vehicles.
