1. Iran protests escalate as crackdown continues
- Iran has seen one of the biggest nights of protests since anti-government demonstrations erupted 6 weeks ago.
- Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in all major cities, as well as other places where demonstrations had subsided recently.
- The escalation came after protesters marked 40 days since Kurdish Iranian woman Mahsa Amini died in police custody, sparking the unrest.
- It is the most serious challenge to the Islamic republic since its inception.

2.  South Africa: Illegal miners cleared of gang rape
- 14 illegal miners in South Africa have been cleared of rape charges after DNA evidence failed to link them to the crime.
- In July, 8 women were attacked by dozens of men while they were filming a music video near an abandoned mine outside Johannesburg.
- Reports of the attack rocked South Africa and led to violent protests and threats against undocumented migrants.
